where you actually meet Playoffs
Playoffs change the calculus completely: you now know your partners, you can plan around each other between matches, and defence becomes far more common than it was in quals. The double-elimination bracket also means one bad match is survivable — so alliances tend to hold their riskiest strategy back until they are in the lower bracket with nothing left to lose.
