The gyro is what makes field-oriented driving and any straight autonomous work at all. It also drifts, and it drifts much worse if you calibrate it while the robot is moving — which is exactly what happens when someone bumps the cart during the pre-match calibration. Mount it rigidly near the centre of rotation, calibrate at rest, and re-zero deliberately.
